One of the plenary

of many sociological studies including Permissive Britain (1975) and The
Strange Death of Moral Britain (2004), and three influential books on
humor: Ethnic Humor Around the World: a Comparative Analysis (1990),
Jokes and their Relation to Society (1998) and The Mirth of Nations
(2002). His academic articles have been published in the leading journals. He
has also been a regular contributor to national and international
newspapers, and appeared on many television and radio interviews. His main

morality and of humour. The topic of Professor Davies's lecture at the
conference is: "How jokes change as they migrate and how they migrate."
Another plenary lecturer who gracefully agreed to attend the conference is Professor Elżbieta Tabakowska from the Jagiellonian University, head of UNESCO Chair for Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication. Professor Tabakowska is a prominent Polish linguist, the author of over a hundred scholarly articles and, among others, the following books: Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation (1993), Język i obrazowanie. Wprowadzenie do językoznawstwa kognitywnego [Language and Imagery: An Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics] (1995). She is also an accomplished translator of historical studies, notably many books by the British historian Norman Davies (including God's Playground, Rising '44 and Europe). Based on her experience of translating Davies's Europe, she published O przekładzie na przykładzie. Rozprawa tłumacza z Europą Normana Daviesa (1998). Her colleagues and friends recently dedicated to her a special volume entitled Cognition in Language: Volume in Honor of Professor Elżbieta Tabakowska (2007).
