ACROSS BORDERS IV:
MIGRATION IN CULTURE, LANGUAGE AND LITERATURE


INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE IN KROSNO, POLAND, 16-17 April 2010

The conference aims at investigating aspects of culture, language and literature in the context of a world made more mobile than ever before. Intercultural encounters accompanying the movement of individuals and groups receive a variety of expressions and call for a debate in an interdisciplinary context. The organizers of the conference wish to invite scholars to a discussion on subjects related to:


-          migration and narration,

-          autobiography and identity,

-          the other in literature,

-          minority cultures and literatures,

-          dialectology,

-          cross-cultural aspects of translation,

-          pragmatics of intercultural communication

-          creativity and tradition in cultural communication

-          humour in culture and society,

-          language contacts,

-          cultural and linguistic globalization,

-          culture and the teaching of languages.

 

Conference languages: English (preferable) and Polish (summaries in English required)

Selected papers will be published in a conference proceedings volume.

 

Plenary speakers:

One of the plenary lectures planned for the conference will be delivered by Professor Christie Davies from the University of Reading, UK. Professor Davies is the author of many sociological studies including Permissive Britain (1975) and The Strange Death of Moral Britain (2004), and three influential books on humor: Ethnic Humor Around the World: a Comparative Analysis (1990), Jokes and their Relation to Society (1998) and The Mirth of Nations (2002). His academic articles have been published in the leading journals. He has also been a regular contributor to national and international newspapers, and appeared on many television and radio interviews. His main research interests continue to be in the comparative and historical study of morality and of humour. The topic of Professor Davies's lecture at the conference is: "How jokes change as they migrate and how they migrate."


Another plenary lecturer who gracefully agreed to attend the conference is Professor Elżbieta Tabakowska from the Jagiellonian University, head of UNESCO Chair for Translation  Studies and Intercultural Communication. Professor Tabakowska is a prominent Polish linguist, the author of over a hundred scholarly articles and, among others, the following books: Cognitive Linguistics and Poetics of Translation (1993), Język i obrazowanie. Wprowadzenie do językoznawstwa kognitywnego [Language and Imagery: An Introduction to Cognitive Linguistics] (1995).  She is also an accomplished translator of historical studies,  notably many books by the British historian Norman Davies (including God's Playground, Rising '44 and Europe). Based on her experience of translating Davies's Europe, she published O przekładzie na przykładzie. Rozprawa tłumacza z Europą Normana Daviesa (1998). Her colleagues and friends recently dedicated to her a special volume entitled Cognition in Language: Volume in Honor of Professor Elżbieta Tabakowska (2007). Professor Tabakowska will  speak about  "Grammar, culture and translation."


Carlos Morton, an American playwright who dramatizes the Californian borderland, will read fragments of his plays. Morton has over one hundred theatrical productions, both in the U.S. and abroad.  His professional credits include the San Francisco Mime Troupe, the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Denver Center Theatre, La Companía Nacional de México, the Puerto Rican Traveling Theatre, and the Arizona Theatre Company. He has also written for Columbia Pictures Television and worked as a consultant for Fox Television.  He is the author of The Many Deaths of Danny Rosales and Other Plays (1983),Johnny Tenorio and Other Plays (1992, The Fickle Finger of Lady Death (1996), Rancho Hollywood y otras obras del teatro chicano,(1999), Dreaming on a Sunday in the Alameda (2004), and Children of the Sun: Scenes for Latino Youth (2008). Morton has lived on the border between Mexico and the United States since 1981, teaching at universities in Texas, California and Mexico. He is Professor of Theater and Dance at the University of California, Santa Barbara. In 2006-2007 he was named Distinguished Fulbright Lecturer to Poland.
